Chemistry - Nanoscience Flashcards
Uses of nanoparticles in glass
Glass can be coated with titanuim oxide nanoparticles. Sunshine triggers a chemical reaction that breaks down dirt that lands on the window. When it rains, the water spreads evenly over the surface of the glass, washing off the broken-down dirt.
Uses of nanoparticles in sunscreen
Titanuim oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles are also used in modern sunscreens. Scientists can coat nanoparticles of the metal oxide with a coating of silica. The thickness of the silica coating can be adjusted at an atomic level. These coated nanoparticles are most effective at blocking the sun’s rays than conventional UV absorbers.
Uses of nanoparticles in cosmetics
Nanoparticles in face creams are absorbed deeper into the skin.
Uses of nanoparticles in medicine
Nanoparticles can be used to transport drugs around the body.
Uses of nanoparticles in cleaning
Sliver nanoparticles can be used in bandages and cleaning products to protect against bacteria.
Uses of nanoparticles in electricity
Nanowires are being developed which could make it possible to make incredibly small electric currents.
Dangers of nanoparticles
As nanoparticles are so small, they can easily enter our bloodstream without us realising. Also washing clothes that have silver nanoparticles mean that the silver could affect aquatic organisms.
