Physics P8 Forces Flashcards
Scalar
Physical quantities that have size/magnitude but no direction.
Magnitude
The size of a quantity.
Vectors
Physical quantities that have size/magnitude and direction.
Displacement
Displacement is a vector quantity that refers to “how far out of place an object is”; it is the objects overall change in position.
Scalar or vector
Speed
Speed is a scalar quantity
Scalar or vector
Velocity
Velocity is a vector quantity
Newtons 3rd law
When 2 objects interact with each other they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
Newtons second law
In order to make an object move from rest, the forces must be unequal.
Friction
Friction is the force exerted by a surface against an object when it moves across it
Resultant force
A resultant force is a force that is produced in a certain direction due to a combination of forces
Equation for moments
Moment(Nm) = Force(N) X Distance(m)
