Biology B2 Flashcards
Stages of cell division
Interphase, Mitosis and cytokinesis
Interphase
The cell is preparing to divide
The chromosomes are replicated and the cell gets bigger
The organelles are replicated
Mitosis
The chromosone s line up along the centre of the cell
They attach to spindle fibres
The spindle fibres then contract and the chromosomes get pulled to opposite ends of the cell
The nucleus divides
Cytokinesis
The cytoplasm and membrane divide
2 new genetically identical daughter cells are formed
Embryonic stem cells
Embryonic stem cells are found in embryos and can differentiate into almost every cell type
Adult stem cells
Adult stem cells are found in adult tissues (such as bone marrow brain ,muscle ,liver ,stem cells). They can differentiate only into cells from the type of tissue where they are found.
Stem cell
A stem cell can replicate many times and has the potential to become specialised
Process of therapeutic cloning
Nucleus taken out of human egg cell
Nucleus from a patients cell put into the egg cell
Egg cell stimulated to divide to develop into an embryo
Stem cells taken from the embryo after 4 to 5 days
Stem cells grown in a container of warm nutrients
Stem cells treated to develop into required cell types for a patient
