Chemistry-Atomic sturcture,Chemistry of the atomsphere and the using of resources Flashcards
What are atoms made of?
Protons, neutrons (in the nucleus), and electrons (orbiting the nucleus).
What is the relative mass and charge of subatomic particles?
Proton: Mass = 1, Charge = +1.
Neutron: Mass = 1, Charge = 0.
Electron: Mass = negligible (~1/1836), Charge = -1.
What is an isotope?
Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
What gases are present in the atmosphere today?
Nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (21%), and trace gases (including CO₂, Argon, Water vapor).
How did Earth’s early atmosphere form?
Volcanic activity released gases like CO₂, water vapor, ammonia, and methane.
What caused oxygen levels to increase?
Photosynthesis by early algae and plants released oxygen.
What are finite resources?
Natural resources that are limited and will eventually run out (e.g., fossil fuels, metals).
What is potable water?
Water that is safe to drink, typically treated to remove contaminants.
What is the purpose of recycling?
To reduce waste, save energy, and conserve finite resources.
