Chemistry 1 Flashcards
What is Chemistry?
It is the science of studying properties of matter and how it changes
Define Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
What does WHIMIS stand for
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information# system
Define properties
characteristics used to describe a substance
examples of physical properties
Density
Texture
Melting Point
Shape
Boiling Point
Size
Solubility
Colour
Ductility
Odour
Malleability
Mass
Physical Change vs. Chemical change
Physical change is any change a substance has but the substances chemical identity isn’t changed
Chemical change is when two or more substances react and one or more new substances is formed
Examples of physical change
Changes of state
Dissolving
breaking glass
Examples of chemical change
Combustion
Mixing an acid and a base
Photosynthesis
Iron Rusting
Define a pure substance
Consists of only one kind of matter. Elements and compounds are pure substances
Define element
A material that cannot be broken down any further
Define compound
two or more elements combined
Define mixture
A mixture is a physical combination of pure substances, there are 4 types
Define mechanical mixture
each substance that makes up the mixture is distinct or visible.
Define solution
the substances are NOT visibly distinct from each other.
Define suspension
tiny particles of one substance are held within another in a cloudy mixture.
