Chemistery 3 Flashcards
What are the 7 physical properties of metals?
High density good conductors of electricity ductile and malleable high melting and boiling pollution strong and tough good heat conductors solid state at room temperature(except mercury)
What are the 7 non-metal physical properties?
low melting point dull brittle low density do not conduct electricity do not conduct heat
Why are alloy wheels made from aluminium?
because they can resist weight.
why is jewellery made out of gold?
because it is strong and tough.
why are water pipes made out of copper?
because copper does not rust is malleable and is cheaper.
What does MASH stand for?
M metals Acid (arrow) Salt hydrogen
What s is the equation linking to metals reacting with acids?
Meatls+ acid ——-> salt+hydrogen
how will you write hydrochoric acid when it has reacted with a metal?
chloride
how will you write sulphuric acid when it has reacted with a metal?
sulphate
how will you write nitric acid when it has reacted with a metal?
nitrate
what is the formula for hydrochloric acid?
HCl
what is the formula for sulfuric acid?
H( small 2 down)SO(small 4 down)
what is the formula for nitric acid?
HNO(small 3 down)
What is a chemical reaction?
a chemical reaction is when one or more new chemical substances are made from the starting material.
What are the starting substances in a chemical reaction called?
reactants
what are things called that is the outcome of the reaction?
products
What are the 6 things that tell us that a chemical reaction has taken place?
colour change
gas coming off( you see fizzing or bubbling in the reaction)
a change in temperature
a solid may be formed when 2 liquids are mixed
some also make noise
some even make electricity
Name the three things about hydrogen
is colourless, odourless
less dense than air
forms an explosive mixture with air
How can we test for hydrogen?
place a burning splint next to a test tube and a ‘squeaky pop’ as the gas indicates show that hydrogen is produced in this reaction
what do we call a thing that is made up of one type of atom?
If the solid, liquid or gas is made up of only one type of atom than we call it an element.
What are the three ways you can speed up a reaction?
Increased surface area
increased concentration
increase temperature
