Chemical kinetics Flashcards
On a graph, an ______ reaction occurs when the reactants start at a higher energy than the products (products end at a lower level than the reactants)
Exergonic
On a graph, an ______ reaction occurs when the products end at a higher energy than the reactants start
Endergonic
The reaction rate is a measure of how _____
quickly the concentrations of reactants and products are changing
How would you find the overall order of this reaction:
rate= k[A]^x[B]^y
Add x and y together
How do you determine the rate of each reactant?
Is a reaction rate written with the reactants or the products?
Reactants
Since reactants are disappearing, they’re usually written with a ____ sign, while products are written with a _____ sign bc they’re appearing
Negative
Positive
What are the steps to determining the rate of a reactant?
1) Find a column where that reactant changes but the others stay the same
2) Compare the magnitude of change to that of the product
ex: if the reactant doubles and so does the product, then the reaction is first order since they are 1:1. If the reactant doubles and the product quadruples, then it’s second order
3) Repeat for the other reactants
This order reaction occurs when the rate of product formation is independent of the [reactant] changing
Zero-order
This order reaction occurs when the rate of product formation is a 1:1 ratio with reactant dissolution
First-order
This order reaction occurs when the rate of product formation is the square of the reactants dissolution (1:2 ratio)
Second-order
