Chemical Formulas Flashcards
Category 1
Binary ionic compounds where the metal present forms only a single type of positive charged ion (cation)
Category 2
Binary ionic compounds where the metal forms more than 1 type of ionic compound with given negative ion (anion)
Category 3
Binary covalent compounds formed between 2 nonmetals
Polyatomic Ion
A group of elements that act like a single ion when forming a compound
Ternary Compounds
If compounds formed with the polyatomic ions consist of 3 elements
Formula Mass
The sum of the atomic mass units of all the atoms (or ions) contained in a formula
Molecular Mass
The sum of the masses of all the atoms in a molecule of a substance
Percentage Composition
What percent of total weight of a compound is made up of a particular element
Law of Definite Composition
A compound is composed of 2/more elements chemically combined in a ratio by weight
Law of Multiple Proportions
When any 2 elements, A & B, combine to form more than 1 compound, the different masses of B that unite with a fixed mass of A bear a small whole-number ratio to each other
Common Base
Aqueous solutions containing hydroxide ions
OH^-
Common Acid
Aqueous solutions of hydrogen compounds that contain hydrogen ions
H^+
Binary Acid
Acid composed of 2 two elements
Prefix “hydro” in front of stem/full name of nonmetallic element with ending “ic”
Ex; Hydrochloric acid, HCL
Ternary Acid
Acid containing 3 different elements
Usually hydrogen, a nonmetal & oxygen
Equation
Simplified way of recording a chemical change
