Chemical Equilibrium Flashcards
Equilibrium
When the forward reaction rate is equal to the reverse reaction rate
Law of Mass Action
The rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the product of the concentrations of the reacting substances
If equilibrium constant is large
Equilibrium does not occur until the concentrations of the original reactants are small & those of the products large
If equilibrium constant is small
Equilibrium occurs almost at once & relatively little product is produced
Le Chateliers Principle
If a stress is placed upon a system in equilibrium, the equilibrium is displaced in the direction that counteracts the effect of the stress
Small value of acid dissociation constant
Concentration of un-ionized molecule must be relatively large compared with the ion concentrations
Large value for acid dissociation constant
Concentrations of ions are relatively large
The larger the value for ionizaton constant, the stronger the acid
Second Law of Thermodynamics
Entropy of the universe increases for any spontaneous process
