chemical bonding Flashcards
define chemical bonding
described as force of attraction between combining atoms
what will occur during chemical bonding
atoms use their valence electrons to form bonds
atoms may lose or gain or share valence electrons to form bonds
as changes occur new particles formed called ions or molecules
atoms now become stable by attaining full valence shell
what are the three main types of bonding
ionic
covalent
metallic
define ionic bonding
or electrovalent bonding involves transfer of valence electrons from metal atoms to non metal atoms
metals form positively charged cation while non metal forms negatively charged anion
define covalent bonding
occurs when 2 or more non metals atoms bond involving the sharing of a pair of electrons
shared electrons orbit around both atoms which complete their respective outer shells
only unpaired valence electrons used in bonding
how can we tell how many covalent bonds an atom can form
number of unpaired valence electrons
define metallic bonding
metals form giant structures in which electrons in outer shells of metal atoms are free to move or become delocalised or mobile
means valence electrons no longer associated with any one specific atoms
forms positive cations
created by electrostatic force of attraction between positive cations and delocalised electrons
