Chem/Physics Flashcards
Chiral
Any molecule that cannot he superimposed on its mirror image, contains a chiral centre
Achiral
Any molecule that can be superimposed on its mirror image and has a plane of symmetry
Chiral centres/stereocentre/stereogenic centre/asymmetric centre
Has four different groups bonded to it, usually carbon
Absolute configuration
R- clockwise, S-counterclockwise
Enantiomer
Non-superimposable mirror images, chiral centers with opposite absolute configurations and optical activity
Optical activity
If a compound rotates the plane of polarized light: d- clockwise, l-counterclockwise
Specific rotation
The magnitude of rotation of plane polarized light for any compound
What is optical activity (specific rotation) dependent on?
Structure of the molecule, concentration of the sample, path length through which the light must travel
Resolution
The process of separating a racemic mixture
Meso compound
Compounds that contain chiral centers but also an internal plane of symmetry, optically inactive
Geometric isomers
Diastereomers that differ in orientation around a ring or double bond
