Chem Of Life Flashcards
Water
molecule made of 2 atoms of hydrogen covalently bonded to 1 atom of oxygen
Polar molecule
Unequal distribution of charges
- One side is more positive
- One side is more negative
- Dissolves
in water
- Ex: Water
Polar molecule
Unequal distribution of charges
- One side is more positive
- One side is more negative
- Dissolves
in water
- Ex: Water
Nonpolar molecule
no Seperation of charge, so no
positive or negative poles are formed
- Does not
dissolve in water
- Ex: COz, 02, lipids
Periods tell u
How many energy levels an atom has
Groups tell u
How many valence electrons and atom has
Water molecule interactions
Polar water molecules can be attraded
to each other
- The partially positive hydrogen atom is attracted to the partially negative oxygen atom of a DIFFERENT water molecule
A hydrogen bond
- The partially positive hydrogen atom is attracted to the partially negative oxygen atom of a DIFFERENT water molecule
Stronger covalent bonds…
Holds the water molecules internally
Weaker hydrogen bonds…
Hold different water molecules externally
Cohesion
The Attraction between molecules of the same substance
- Water sticking to water
- Tendency of molecules of the SAME
“kind” to stick together
- Causes High surface tension
- Measure of how difficult it is to Stretch or break the surface of a liquid/resist an external force
Adhesion
the type of attraction that happens between two diffefent
molecules
- Forms
- Glass, soil, plant tissue, cotton, etc.
Stronger bonds than cohesion
- Example:
- Meniscus forming on graduated cylinder
- Capillary action, seen in ACtion , trees and with straws too!
High specific heat
The Temperature of water does not change easily
- Water has to absorb more heat energy to increase overall temperature compared to other compounds
- This helps to regulate Cell
- Its temperature does NOT
temperatures in organisms
fluctuate very much → allows life to live in Water
Less dense as a solid
Solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water → it floats
in liquid water
- Since ice floats in water → Life can exist under frozen surfaces of lakes/polar seas
Water is a terrific solvent
- Water’s polarity makes it really good at dissolving things, and thus it is considered the universa
solvent - it dissolves more substances
than any other liquid!
