chem ch 6 equilibirum and solubility Flashcards
What is the Keq equation
[Products]/[Reactant]
What is the reaction quotient (Q)
It gives us the CURRENT concentration even if the reaction is not at equilibrium. Equation is same as Keq equation. [Products]/[Reactant]
What does Q<Keq mean
This means that the concentration of products is less than what it should be when it’s at equilibrium. Meaning the reaction should go forward.
What does Q=Keq mean
This means that the concentration of products is equal right now is equal to the concentration of products when they’re at equilibrium. Meaning the reaction is at equilibrium and will not go forward or backward.
What does Q>Keq mean
Means there is higher concentration of products right now than their should be when the reaction is at equilibrium. So the reaction will go in reverse
What is Kw
The auto-ionization of water
1.0 * 10^-14
Kw= Ka x Kb
What is the ONLY thing that can effect the equilibrium of a reaction
Temperature. It can even affect the Kw (Keq) of water
What is Ka, Kb, Kw, and Ksp
Keq of an acid
of a base
of water
of solubility products
What do Keq equations leave out ?
Liquids (like water)
solids
b/c they cannot be compressed and so their concentration does not change
What is Kd
equilibrium constant of a dissociation reaction where a molecule dissociates into separate parts
opposite of Ka which is association (not to be confused with acid)
dissociation vs association
association means things are coming together
dissociation means things are separating
ex : Kd and Ka dissociation and association constant of two different enzyme reactions. Dissociation where the Product side is Enzyme and Sustrate dissociated and separate and the association side where the Enzyme Substrate complex is the product.
