BCH Ch3 nonenzymatic proteins Flashcards
What are the proteins in the cytoskeleton which give our cells structural support?
Acting and tubulin proteins
What are the proteins in our extracellular matrix which provide structural support?
Collagen
Elastin
Keratin
what is the function of actin in our body
it is the most abundant protein in eukaryotic CELLS a motor protein
-assembles into polymers known as microfilaments which play a structural role in cells
-work with myosin in muscle cells to cause muscular contraction
-form contractile ring during part of cell division
what is the function of myosin in our body
a motor protein which
-aids in muscle contraction
-moves vesicles along microfilaments
What are the types of Tubulin proteins and what is the function of tubulin
Alpha and Beta Tubulin form a heterodimer and is the building blocks of microtubules.
Microtubules are polar meaning they have one negative and one positive end. Alpa tubulin is exposed on negative end and Beta tubulin Is exposed on positive end.
What is collagen
a helical fiber made of 3 interwoven strands and composes a large portion of the extracellular matrix and it provides structure to bone, ligaments, and tendons
What is Elastin
protein in the extracellular matrix providing structure to body with the unique ability to allow tissues to stretch and snap back into place without permanent damage.
What is keratin
structural protein protecting our body and acting as hard barrier against outside world. Specifically concentrated in epithelial cells.
What do kinesin and dynein do
they are motor proteins allowing them to move in the cell by hydrolyzing ATP.
They both move vesicles along microfilaments.
What are GPCR’s ?
G-protien Couple receptors are transmembrane protein receptors which change conformation upon binding of a ligand which induces signal inside the cell.
pores and ion channels vs active transporters
Pores and ion channels allow ions and mlcls to diffuse down their concentration graident
active transporters are proteins that can move ions and large mlcls AGAINST their concentration gradient.
what are aquaporins
a pore which allows water to pass in and out of cell
what are peptide hormones
slow acting chemical messenger proteins which travel thru the blood
what are antibodies
proteins which are apart of our immune system and circulate throughout our blood and activate an immune response upon detection of a foreign material or pathogen
