Chem 30 Common Organic Compounds Flashcards
Methane
Family: Alkane
Origin: main ingredient in natural gas. Trapped in rock formations underground.
Use: fuel to heat homes. also a vehicle fuel
Ethane
Family: Alkane
Origin: a component of natural gas.
Use: can be cracked to form ethene (ethene is a monomer that forms the polyers polyethylene, PVC, and polystyrene).
Propane
Family: Alkane
Origin: a component of natural gas. Also obtained from refining crude oil.
Use: fuel for barbeques, camping lanterns, campstoves. Also an alternative fuel for cars.
Octane
Family: Alkane
Origin: obtained from the refining of crude oil.
Use: component of gasoline. Vehicle fuel.
Methanol
aka wood alcohol
Family: alcohol
Origin: produced from the reaction of methane and steam –> products react to form methanol.
Use: gasoline additive. windshield washer and gas line antifreeze.
Ethanol
aka grain alcohol
Family: alcohol
Origin: produced from the fermentation of sugars and starch from grains.
Use: gasoline additive. solvent in multiple products. Also in alcoholic beverages.
Ethanoic acid
aka acetic acid
Family: carboxylic acid
Origin: fermentation of sugar to ethanol, then to ethanoic acid.
Use: vinegar (food preservative). also polyvinyl acetate and textile dying.
Benzene
Family: aromatic
Origin: petroleum. Coal tar.
Use: It is carcinogenic and is present in gasoline in only minute quantities. Present in ASA, TNT, salicylic acid, cinnamon and polystyrene.
Glucose
Family: monosaccharide
a source of energy. Metabolic intermediate. Product of cellular respiration.
Polyethylene
Family: polymer
Origin: an addition polymer formed from ethene.
Use: Used in plastics.
