Chem (15.12.22) Flashcards
Description of a Proton?
-Heavy, positive in shells
Description of a Neutron?
-Heavy, neutral
Description of a Nucleus?
-Tiny, positive mass of atoms
Description of an Electron?
-Hardly any mass, negative in shells around the nucleus
What is an Isotope?
An element that changes the number of neutrons, they have the same n. of protons and electrons (atomic number), but a different n. of neutrons (mass number)
How do you calculate the relative atomic mass?
r.a.m= number of neutrons + protons
What is the Relative Atomic Mass?
gives information about how heavy different atoms are compared to an atom of carbon eg: carbon has an Ar of exactly 12
-it is the average mass of all ISOTOPES on an element
-it considers the relative abundance of each isotope and its relative mass
What is a Mole?
-the unit for the amount of a substance
6.02 x 10(to the power of)23= one mole= Avogrado’s number (number of atoms)
What is the Theoretical Yield?
% yield of a rxn
-compares the experimental yield with the theoretical one
What is a Yield?
-the amount of a product we do get is called the experimental yield
-usually gets compared to the theoretical maximum o give us the % yield
How do you calculate the % yield?
% yield = actual mass produced/theoretical mass of product x 100
-actual mass is always less than theoretical mass
What is Combustion?
Happens when a substance reacts with oxygen when it’s burned in air
