Chedy - theme 10 Flashcards
Control centres:
Vestibular nuclei in brain stem and cerebellum coordinate nervous output (responses).
Signal transduction:
External stimulus -> change in membrane potential of sensory neurons -> neural signal
Sense receptors:
Thermoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, electromagnetic receptors, photoreceptors, chemoreceptors, proprioreceptors, nociceptors (pain)
Pacinian corpuscles:
Mechanoreceptors in deep skin. Sensitive to vibration, texture, pressure, low frequency sound. Concentric circles of connective tissue around
Meissner’s corpuscles:
Near skin surface. Sensitive to light pressure and touch.
Ruffini corpuscles:
Mechanoreceptors in deep skin. Sensitive to skin distortion and deep pressure.
Stretch receptors:
Mechanical distortion of ion channels triggers depolarization. Commonly found in organ walls; in stomach, stretch is interpreted as fullness.
Stereocilia:
In ear and equilibrium organs, the body surface of some fish and amphibians. Hairlike mechanoreceptors deform and trigger APs AND release a ntransmitter.
Lateral line system in fish:
A row of neuromasts (receptor for mechanical changes in water) along each side of the body and a vertical section through the skin and lateral line canal. ***textbook
Signal intensity:
Brain interprets higher frequency of APs as a stronger stimulus.
In what organisms is the single lens eye found?
Vertebrates, some mollusks/snails/annelids
The only detail of the eye that I don’t know - which humour goes in which cavity?
Anterior - aqueous
Posterior - vitreous
