CHE 021 - LESSON 2 Flashcards
Smallest possible unit into which matter can be divided, while still maintaining its properties.
ATOMS
Defined as 1/12 of the mass of the carbon-12 atom.
1 atomic mass unit (amu)
It has a mass of about 1 (1.007) amu.
PROTON
It has a mass of about 1 (1.008) amu.
NEUTRON
It has a very small mass, 0.000549 amu.
ELECTRON
The alphabet to the language of molecules.
To make molecules, you must have?
Made of atoms. While the atoms may have different weights and organization, they are all built in the same way.
ELEMENTS
Atomic number equals the number of what?
PROTONS or ELECTRONS
Atomic mass equals the number of what?
PROTONS + NEUTRONS
Counting Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons (REVEAL ANSWER)
TO GET Protons: See only the Atomic Number.
TO GET Neutrons: Mass Number minus the number of protons.
TO GET Electrons: If it’s an atom, the protons and electrons must be the SAME so that it is has a net charge of zero (equal numbers of + and -)
If not: it is an ION.
