What is an open skill ?
Skills that is performed in an unpredictable sporting environment and changes frequently
An example of an open skill ( and why)
- a pass in a team game because the set up of the other will change every pass therefore it is never the same
- the team you are playing will change therefore that’s an open skill because it can’t be predicted
What is a closed skill ?
When the skill is performed in a predictable environment where performers dont have to adapt actions during doing the skill.
Examples of a closed skill
-Shot put is a closed skill because the environnement you are competing in it remains the same.
- Diving is also a closed skill because the environment does not affect the way that the skill is completed
What is a gross skill ?
Performed using large muscle groups
What is an example of a gross skill ?
- tackling in rugby (shoulder muscle group)
What is a fine skill ?
The use of smaller and intricate muscle groups.
What is an example of a fine skill ?
Table tennis shot
Using the eyes and fingers
What is a self-paced skill ?
A skill that the performer controls what speed the skill can be done at.
What is an example of a self-paced skill ?
Throwing a javelin
Bowling a cricket ball
What is an externally-paced skill ?
Where the skill cannot be performed when the performer wants and they have no control over when they start the skill.
What is an example of an externally-paced skill ?
Receiving a serve in tennis
Dancing (must be in time with the music)
What is a discrete skill ?
When a skill has a clear beginning and end.
This is usually one sharp and clear action.
What is an example of a discrete skill ?
Serving in tennis.
Hitting the ball with the bat in rounders.
