Marcus Cicero speaks of his troubles - ran out of money, doesn’t like philosophy school
after - Marcus writes letter to Tiro

Horatiae nuptiae
Quintus continues to study at Academia
receives letter from parents
Horatia is getting married to Decimus
-the nuptial rituals - goodbye to child, goodbye to family
after: Quintus wrote to Horatia
state of Rome increasingly growing volatile -
Antony tried to increase power
Octavian came to Rome, assumed name of Caesar, distributed money to soldiers
senators trying to lead Octavian into own party
predicting many civil wars

chapter 31
Brutus arrived to Athens
Marcus perturbed - father going to visit him at Lyceum in school of Cratippus
However hoax - not coming
Quintus listens to Theo’s lecture - what must a good man do when a tyrant threatens the republic and cuts off the freedom of citizens” - about Brutus
Brutus arrives, raises hand, then leaves
After : young men decide they must defend Rome from tyranny of Antony - because of Brutus’ speech
Brutus stays in Athens for a bit longer - then leaves to Rome
chapter 32
civil war
Marcus leaves to campaign in Macedonia with Brutus - he believes he has no use in school of philosophy
worse news from Rome - Octavian praised by Cicero
Antony led own forces into Gallia
banded together with senators - crushed Antony at Further Gaul
Octavian, with power of military behind him, demanded senate anoint him as consul - initially refuse
however marches into Rome with troops
Senators terrified - concede
Cicero retreats to his country home in despair
Octavian had gone away, leading army against Antony
however settle matter not by swords, but by words
decide to form treaty/alliance then divide Italy between them as 2nd triumverate - with Lepidus
deputies order senators to establish triumverate in law
proscription to rid their enemies
chapter 32b
the death of Cicero
after - no one had opposed Antony more than Cicero
Cicero tries to escape by boat
however driven back by adverse wins
returns to die in the country he had saved
asks to be carried in a litter to the village - head cut off, hands cut off, sent to Antony
