Chapters 20-22 Flashcards
Self-Management, Habit Reversal Procedures, Token Economies
What is self-management?
Engaging in one behaviour to control or prevent the occurrence of a target behaviour
What are the controlling and controlled responses in the context of self-management?
Controlling response: behaviour that influences future occurrences of the controlled response
Controlled response: the behaviour subject to change.
What is goal-setting?
explicitly determining the criterion level of target behaviour and timeframe before achievement.
What is self-monitoring?
Person observes and records own behaviour as it occurs.
What is a behavioural contract?
A written document that specifies and defines the target behaviour, data collection, criteria, contingencies, etc.
What are ego depletion and decision fatigue?
Ego depletion: after exerting self-control on one task, one is less effective on a subsequent self-control task
Decision fatigue: making decisions depletes willpower.
What are some temporary ways to increase willpower?
Consume glucose (immediate)
Consume protein and complex carbs (short term)
Rest, relaxation, mindfulness, meditation (short term)
How are habits defined?
Repetitive or stereotyped behaviours (persistent postural, gestural, verbal responses) that serve no useful purpose and tend to be an annoyance.
Body-focused repetitive behaviours, motor tics, vocal tics, and Tourette’s Syndrome are examples of what kind of disorder?
Habit Disorders.
Habit reversal training consists of __________ training and __________ __________ training.
awareness, competing response.
Covert desensitization is also known as __________ aversion.
imagined.
What is a token?
A conditioned reinforcer that can be given immediately after a behaviour and exchanged later for known (backup) reinforcers.
