Fear
Short lived and deals with the present
Anxiety
Longer in duration and is future focused
Anxiety Disorder
Becomes a disorder when it results in functional impairment
Phobias
Is fear out of proportion to actual threat, Awareness that fear is excessive, and must be severe enough to cause distress or interfere with job or social life
Specific Phobias
Disproportionate fear of a particular object of situation and symptoms persist for six months
Social Anxiety Disorder
Persistent, intense fear and avoidance of social situations, and fear of negative evaluation or scrutiny (Causes more life disruption than other phobias)
Social Anxiety Criteria
Afraid of social encounters, will avoid anything that would trigger anxiety and symptoms must persist for six months
Panic Disorder
Frequent panic attacks unrelated to specific situations with intense urge to flee
Panic Disorder Symptoms
Labored breathing, heart palpitations, nausea, upset stomach, chest pain, feelings of choking and smothering, dizziness, sweating, lightheadedness, chills, heat sensations, and trembling
Agoraphobia
Anxiety about inability to flee from provoking anxiety and it deals specifically with the inability to escape
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Involves chronic, excessive, uncontrollable worry, last at least 6 months, Interferes with daily life and common worries are health, relationship, education, and finance
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Criteria
Excessive anxiety and worry at least 50 percent of days about at least two life domains (e.g., family, health, finances, work, and school),
the worry is sustained for at least 3 months,
anxiety and worry are associated with at least three symptoms, and must meet at least two criteria such as school and relationship
