Upon arriving to work what are the three told?
The owner - Mr. Thomas - tells them the Farmer’s Association, run by the bank, has demanded he pays no more than 25 cent an hour instead of the usual 30 cent an hour.
They reluctantly agree.
What does Thomas tip the men off about?
The Farmer’s Association’s plan to start a fight at the upcoming Saturday night dance. This will allow them to bring Police in and destroy the camp as they do not like that it is independent.
What does the Association’s plan indicate?
That they will stop at nothing to keep them oppressed and available for cheap work.
Who is Jim Rawley and what is he a glimmer of?
Camp manager - Introduces himself at breakfast. A glimmer of humanity amongst inhumanity, representing the good that can come from collaboration in the Okie community.
Who is Mrs Sandry and what does she in-still into Rose of Sharon?
A religious zealot - warns Rose of Sharon that dancing intimately on Saturday will mean a miscarriage.
What is Rose of Sharon worried about?
Her and Connie danced intimately back home. She confesses so to Mr. Rawley who tells her not to worry about the superstition.
What is the difference between Casy’s understanding of religion and Mrs. Sandry’s.
Mrs Sandry holds a black and white depiction of righteousness that divides instead of unifies. She grows Rose of Sharon’s insecurity and guilt.
Casy abandons this firmness.
What do three women visit Ma and Rose of Sharon about?
They are in charge of the Ladies Committee - explain how they regulate sanitation and provide emergency assistance to those who have run out of food. Explain it is aid and not charity.
What does the emphasis on aid and their reluctance to accept it show?
Dignity - they are trying to live as self-sufficiently as possible.
