Chapter Three Key Terms Flashcards
Ion
An electrically charged atom or group of connected atoms.
Cation
The lose of one or more electrons from a neutral atom gives a position charged ion called a cation.
Anion
The gain of one or more electrons by a neutral atom gives a negatively charged ion called an anion.
Octet Rule
The tendency of atoms to gain or lose electrons to achieve a stable, noble gas configuration, that is a completely filled subshell containing eight electrons.
Ionization Energy
The energy required to remove one valence electron from a single atom in the gaseous state.
Electron affinity
The energy released on adding an electron to a single atom in the gaseous state.
Polyatomic Ions
An ion that is composed of more than one atom.
Ionic Bond
The electrical attractions between ions of opposite charge in an ionic compound.
Ionic Solid
A crystalline solid held together by ionic bonds.
Acid
A substance that provided H^+ ions in water.
Base
A substance that provides OH^- ions in water.
