Chapter 4 in Class Flashcards
What are the 7 diatomic molecules?
Iodine, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine
Why do the electronegativity values increase from the left to the right of the periodic table?
Because there is an increase in positive charge of the nucleus in this direction.
Why does electronegativity increase from the bottom of the periodic table to the top?
Because the size of the atom decreases resulting in a smaller distance between the nucleus and valence electron shell increases attraction between protons and electrons.
When do dipole moments exist?
When a bond is formed between 2 atoms with different electronegativities. (The more electronegative atom indicates that electron density is located at the more electronegative atom.
How to tell if a molecule is polar or not?
It is polar if it has either of the following.
If the central atom has lone pair(s) of electrons
There are at least 3 different types of atoms in the molecule
