Chapter Five Key Terms Flashcards
Law of conservation of mass
Matter is neither created nor destroyed in any physical or chemical change.
Balanced equation
A chemical equation in which the numbers and kinds of atoms are the same on both sides of the reaction arrow.
Coefficient
A number placed in front of a formula to balance a chemical equation.
Precipitate
An insoluble solid that forms in solution during a chemical reaction.
Solubility
The maximum amount of a substance that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specified temperature.
If a substance has a low solubility in water is it likely to form a precipitate from an aqueous solution?
Yes.
If a substance has a high solubility in water is it likely to form a precipitate from an aqueous solution?
No.
Salt
An ionic compound formed from reaction of an acid with a base.
What are acid-base neutralization reactions?
Processes in which acid reacts with a base to yield water plus an ionic compound called a salt.
Neutralization reaction
The reaction of an acid with a base.
Oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction
A reaction in which electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
Oxidation
The loss of one or more electrons by an atom.
Reduction
The gain of one or more electrons by an atom.
The atom that loses electrons in a redox reaction is oxidized and acts as the reducing agent. Which means that the other atom is reduced and acts as the oxidizing agent. True or False?
True
Oxidation Number (oxidation state)
A number that indicates whether an atom is neutral, electron-rich, or electron-poor.
