Middle Adulthood
Individuals from ages 40/45 to 60/65
The majority of the population is in middle adulthood
What are your 30’s considered?
30’s can be lumped together with both early adulthood and middle adulthood, as well as made into their own category known as “early middle adulthood”
Healthspan
Period of a persons life during which they are generally healthy and free from serious or chronic illness.
Longevity and Healthspan
Longevity aims to help expand the number of years that are considered a healthy life.
Lifespan
The amount of years someone is alive
Age Identity
Most adults feel 20% younger than they actually are.This is better for physical health!
Senescence
Process of cell deterioration, marked by cells losing their abilities to grow and divide
Physical signs of aging (senescence)
- Wrinkles and saggy skin
- Age spots
- Yellowing teeth
Biological Aging and Size
- Lose height
- Gain weight
- Sarcopenia: age related loss of muscle mass and strength
What can combat sarcopenia?
Weight and strength training

1.Vision: near sight diminishes
2. Hearing: high frequencies go first

Most commonly due to cancer
Sexual Development
Sexual activity slowly declines until around 60-65
Reproductive Development
12% of middle aged couples are infertile, as biologically, women should have children before 25

Inability to conceive after trying for a year
Climacteric
Declining of fertility
-menopause and andropause
Menopause
Cessation of a woman’s periods, often in late 40’s to early 50’s
A few Menopause symptoms
- Hot flashes
- Joint Pain
- Digestive issues
- Hair loss
Andropause
Hormonal change in men marked by a decline in sexual hormone levels. commonly associated with erectile dysfunction
“Treatment” for Menopause
Hormone replacement treatment
-is often linked to cancer
-eases symptoms, not reverses menopause

Ability to reason abstractly
1. may decline around 65
2. includes short term memory, abstract thought, and thinking speed

Accumulation of information and verbal skills as a result of education and experience
1. Increases through mid adulthood
2. Includes vocabulary, formulas, historical facts
