Autism Spectrum Disorder
Ranges from Asperger syndrome to Autistic disorder
Intellectual Disabilities
- Organic Intellectual Disability
- Cultural/ Familial Intellectual Disability
Iq cutoff for Intellectual Disabilities
70
Nature vs Nurture in Intellectual Disabilities
Criteria for gifted children
- precocity: things come earlier and easier
- they march to their own drum (scaffolding)
- have passion to master information (self motivated)
- have high information processing skills (they learn faster)

EX: in math,
3+7=10 so 10-7=3
Metacognition and Executive Function
Thinking about thinking

Test to determine IQ
Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
Mental age divided by chronological age, multiplied by 100
Cognitive development for academic success
- Self control
- Working memory
- Flexibility
Intelligence
Ability to solve problems, learn from experience, and adapt
Organic Disability
Intellectual Disability caused by a genetic disorder or brain damage
EX: Down’s Syndrome
Cultural/ Familial Intellectual Disability
Intellectual Disability caused by development in a below average intellectually stimulating environment
EX: Jeanie, the girl who was abused by being trapped in a closet her entire childhood
Causes of Adhd
- Genetics
- Brain damage during prenatal or postnatal development
- Cigarette or alcohol exposure during prenatal development
- Low birth weight
Asperger Syndrome
A milder form of ASD, associated with good verbal language skills, and a restricted range of interests and relationships
Autistic Disorder
More severe side of ASD associated with social deficiencies, abnormalities in communication, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior
