Generetivity v Stagnation
Generativity: Adult’s desires to leave legacies of themselves to the next generation
Stagnation: Sense that an adult has done nothing for the next generation
Perceived Inequality
Absolute income matter less than how it compares with others in their profession or neighborhood, or their own salary one to two years ago
Social Comparison
Correlates to stagnation
Work meets generetivity needs
- develops and uses personal skills
- Expresses creative energy
- Aid and advise co-workers
- Supports education and health of family
- Contributes to the community by goods or services
Generativity
It is intrinsic
Empty Nest syndrome
Decrease in marital satisfaction after children leave the home
-not common
-the opposite is very common
Refilling Nest
Adult children are moving back in. this causes tension due to a disconnect in conditions and expectations between the parents and child
Adult Sibling relationships
-Parenthood can increase sibling relationship
-Longest relationship in life
-Shared genes and history
Sandwich Generation
Middle adults often have to take care of both their adult children and their elderly parents
Work disadvantages
Adults who cannot find or keep work are 60% more likely to die than others their age
