What do basic attending skills help you do?
They help you make contact with clients and hear them accurately.
What is empathy?
The ability to be sensitive to and understand the clients world.
What is the most important thing to do as a counsellor?
Listen before taking action.
What is an empathic relationship?
When you and the client are in synchrony. You are able to sense and understand their thoughts and feelings.
What is a working alliance?
Another term for an empathic relationship. You and the client work together and focus on their goals, wishes, and aspirations.
What is attending behaviour?
Individual and culture appropriate verbal and nonverbal behaviour.
What are examples of attending behaviour?
Eye contact, vocal tone, body language, and verbal following.
What does attending behaviour do for the client?
It shows that you are listening and helps the client talk more freely.
What is synchrony?
Mirroring people while sensing and understanding their thoughts and feelings.
What are open questions and what do they do?
Open questions begin with what, how or could. They help the client explore issues and talk at greater length.
What are closed questions and what do they do?
Closed questions begin with do, is, are and lead to focused and shorter length answers.
When do questions become bad and why?
When they are used to often as they put the client off and they become defensive.
What are encourages?
Brief responses like head nods or single words and phrases.
What do encourages do?
They encourage more in depth client exploration and bring clarity.
What are restatements?
The repetition of several key words back to the client.
What do restatements do?
They work like an encourager but focuses in more depth on a key issue.
What is a paraphrase?
Feeds back to the client the essence of what they said.
What do paraphrases do?
Provides a check on your listening and may help a client move on to a new topic.
What is reflection of feeling?
It is identifying and feeding back to the client the underlying emotional experience.
What does exploration of emotion do?
It helps to understand a clients deeper desires and wishes.
What does clarifying emotion do?
It steers clients towards making better decisions and actions.
What is the basic listening sequence?
The six basic attending skills.
What happens if you listen carefully?
Clients will often be able to resolve their own issues without advice or direction from you.
