What are emotions? What are their four characteristics?
- -Emotions are feelings that are experienced
- -physiological (internal), behavioral, cognitive, motivational tendencies
What are the eight primary emotions?
- joy, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger
- -acceptance and anticipation
What is the difference between fear and anxiety?
–fear: a specific or object elicits fear. We can pinpoint to see what is causing the negative emotion
–anxiety: is not always clear what is causing the problem. An unpleasant feeling that something bad is about to happen
What is the difference between mild (facilitative) and intense (debilitavive) emotions?
–Mild: they assist us in preparing for the future, solving problems, doing what is best for us, persisting.
–Intense: they disrupt our overall functioning. Could cause ex: may experience difficulty giving a speech. our emotions begin to have negative effects when they are viewed as being excessive in intensity and duration.
Anger most often beings with what kinds of losses or threats?
- -loss of self-esteem
- -loss of face (public exposure of one’s failures)
- -threat of physical harm or violence
- -loss of valued possessions, skills, abilities, relationship etc
What are the four psychological reactions to anger?
- -Seeing yourself as the victim
- -feeling disconnected or ignored
- -feeling powerless
- -looking for justice or revenge
Compare and contrast the importance of intellecutal IQ and emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence: consists of the ability to monitor, access, express, and regulate one’s own emotions, the ability to identity/understand others emotions
– We are both emotional and rational beings we need an intelligent balance of the two
What is the difference between guilt and shame?
–guilt: is about something we did or did not do
–shame: its about who we are as a person
Name and define tow common ways we deny our emotions?
–Repression: exclusion of painful, unwanted or dangerous thoughts from the conscious mind
–Suppression: people are conscious of their emotions but deliberately control rather than express them.
