Chapter 9.7 Flashcards
What are the two major functions of the pentose pathway
1) Serves as a source of ribose 5-phosphate
2) Leads to production of NADPH
What is the rate limiting enzyme of the pentose pathway
-it is glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G6PD)
What is G6PD induced by? What is it inhibited by
- it is induced by insulin
- > abundance of sugar entering the cell induces fuel storage pathways like the pentose pathway
-it is inhibited by NADPH but activated by NADP+
What are the functions of NADPH
1) biosynthesis
- >mainly of fatty acids and cholesterol
2)assisting in cellular bleach production in certain white blood cells
3) Maintenance of a supply of reduce glutathione to protect against reactive oxygen species
- >glutathione is a reducing agent that can help reverse radical formation before the damage is done
4)Protect cells from free radical oxidative damage caused by peroxides
