Chapter 12.2 Flashcards
1
Q
Why are fats preferred as energy storage
A
-because fats are much more energy-dense than other biomolecules
2
Q
What are the two ways ATP can form
A
- it can form through substrate-level phosphorylation
- it can form through oxidative phosphorylation
3
Q
How is ATP consumed
A
-through hydrolysis or transfer of phosphate group to another molecule
4
Q
What makes ATP a high energy compound
A
- because of the repulsion of the negative charges on the phosphate groups
- > after hydrolysis, note that ATP is much more stable
5
Q
What is meant by ATP cleavage
A
- it is the transfer of a high energy phosphate group from ATP to another group
- > the overall free energy of the reaction is determined by taking the sum of the free energies of the individual reactions
