Chapter 9.3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the saturation point
A
- in the process of a creating a solution
- > the equilibrium is reached at the saturation point
- > the solute is at a maximum value for a given temperature and pressure
2
Q
What is the change in free energy for an equlibrium
A
-it is zero
3
Q
How does change in pressure affect the solubility constant
A
- higher pressures favor dissolution of gas solutes
- >therefore, the Ksp will be larger for gases at higher pressure values
4
Q
What is the ion product used for
A
- it is analogous to the reaction quotient
- >it tells us where the reaction is in terms of solubility
5
Q
How does the formation of complex ions affect solubility of a salt in a solution
A
-it increases the salt’s solubility
- note that the complex ion has its own formation or stability constant(Kf)
- Ksp is used for the original dissolution of the solution
6
Q
Describe the common ion effect
A
-the solubility of a salt is considerably reduced when it is dissolved in a solution that already contains one of its constituent ions as compared to its solubility in a pure solvent
- note that the Ksp in this case remains constant
- > even if you add more, there will be less solid dissolved
- > but again the Ksp does not change
