Chapter 8.2 Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the general characteristics of ideal gases in terms of intermolecular forces
A
- ideal gases represent a hypothetical gas with molecules that have no intermolecular forces
- > therefore, they don’t occupy volume
2
Q
When do real gases deviate from that of ideal gases
A
-real gases deviate from that of ideal gases at low temperatures and high pressure(low volume)
3
Q
What is Avogadro’s principle
A
-it is that all gases at a constant temperature and pressure occupy volumes that are directly proportional to the number of moles of gas present
4
Q
What is Dalton’s law of partial pressures
A
-total pressure of a gaseous mixture is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the individual components
5
Q
What is vapor pressure? What does it do to gases at the top of the container?
A
- it is the pressure exerted by evaporative particles above the surface of the liquid
- it forces some of the gas back into the liquid phase
- > therefore, equilibrium is reached between evaporation and condensation
