Chapter 10.4 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the procedure of titration
A
-it is a procedure to determine the concentration of a known reactant in a solution
2
Q
How are titrations formed
A
- it is performed by adding small volumes of a solution of known concentration(titrant) to a known volume of an unknown concentration(titrand)
- > the titrant is added to the titrand until the equivalence point is achieved
3
Q
What is the equivalence point
A
-when the number of acid equivalents present in the original solution equals the base equivalents added or vice versa
4
Q
Does the indicator have to be weaker than the acid or base being tested
A
- yes
- > otherwise, the indicator would be titrated first
- the point at which the indicator changes to its final color is the endpoint
- > it is not the equivalence point
5
Q
What is a buffer solution
A
-it consists of a mixture of weak acid and its salt(conjugate base/cation) or a weak base and its salt(conjugate acid/anion)
-two examples are CH3COOH and CH3COO-/Na+
or NH3 and NH4+/Cl-
