Q

How are Ka and Kb related

A
  • if Ka is large, then Kb is small
  • > by this logic, a strong acid has a weak conjugate base
  • if Kb is large, then Ka is small
  • > by this logic, a strong base has a weak conjugate acid

-note for weak acids and bases, their conjugates are also weak

Q

How does induction affect acid strength

A
  • electronegative elements positioned near an acid proton can increase acid strength
  • > this is because it pulls the electron density of the bond holding the acidic proton
  • > this weakens proton bonding and facilitates dissociation
