Chapter 9-water pollution control Flashcards
compare direct and indirect discharge
direct discharge- when stormwater or other wastewater from a facility is discharged directly to a natural body of water.
indirect discharge- sent to a municipal sewer system
what is potable water and what is the usual source of it in urban areas?
potable water- water that is suitable for drinking. source in urban areas is municipal treatment/distribution system
what are some common reuses of waste water?
used for water supplied to toilets, cooling towers, non potable systems and irrigation (if not softened)
what is sanitary wastewater and how is it disposed of?
sanitary wastewater is all flows generated from a building that result from the use of water, excluding process wastewater and is disposed of by a municipal sewer system or on-site sewage system
On what principle do oil/water separators work?
oils and petroleum products removed from paved surfaces during storms will remain insoluble in water
compare point source and non point source discharges
point source- water that has been discharged at the end of a pipe.
nonpoint source-stormwater that runs across the ground into a stream or a natural body of water
how can leaks in external waterlines be determined?
pressure testing lines and measuring the leakage
what is a detention pond?
manmade ponds with an outlet structure designed to let out only a certain amount of water
what are three types of wastewater that will require a permit?
process/industrial wastewater
stormwater that comes in contact with industrial activities
sanitary wastewater
what does the deisgn of a strom water system start with?
determination of an appropriate design storm (severest storm) likely to occur within a given time period for the area
