Chapter 4- asbestos Flashcards
examples of asbestos diseases
- asbestosis
- lung cancer
- mesothelioma
- colon cancer
- stomach cancer
asbestos containing building materials categories
- TSI (thermal system insulation)-insulating cement
- surfacing materials (acm sprayed onto surfaces for acoustical, decorative, fireproofing purposes)
- miscellaneous materials (mostly nonfriable asbestos products
list asbestos disturbances
- independent contractors working on materials directly
- water damage
- air currents/plenums
- storage on/ near ACM
- uncontrolled asbestos abatement
- miscellaneous contact
- maintenance
- renovations/demolitions
- vandalism
- tenant damage
3 testing methodologies for asbestos
1) PCM (phase contrast microscopy)-inexpensive, cant differentiate bet. asbestos and non asbestos
2) TEM (transmission electron microscopy)-more expensive than other tests, identifies only asbestos fibres
3) PLM (polarized light microscopy)-bulk sampling, inexpensive
objectives of ops and maintenance program for asbestos
1) clean up existing contamination
2) remedy identified hazardous conditions and minimize future fibre release by controlling access to ACM
3) maintain acm until it is eventually removed
describe area sampling
asbestos air sample taken in a building. can be analyzed by PCM / TEM. used for hazard assessments and abatement clearances
describe personal sampling
considers workers movement during the workday. used to determine exposure relative to the provinces acceptable level and verify the effectiveness of exposure controls.
record keeping for asbestos
medical records- retained as long as employee is employed plus 30 years
personal air monitoring results- 30 years
categories of asbestos abatement
1) asbestos removal-completely removing the ACM full engineering controls and regulatory compliance required.
2) encapsulation-applying a sealant to the ACM
3) enclosure-constructing airtight walls and ceilings around ACM
what is the most common method to get asbestos clearance?
PCM
