The United States needed access to the Mississippi River and the port at New Orleans in order to ship crops and cargo to world markets. The purchase also allowed the United States to acquire vast fertile farmlands and other resources.
How did Lewis and Clark determine that the Northwest Passage did not exist?
When Lewis and Clark reached the origin of the Missouri River, they expected the Columbia River to be close by. At Lehmi Pass, Lewis realized that the Bitterroot Mountains and the Rocky Mountains were in the way and that the Missouri and Columbia rivers were not close. Thus the Northwest Passage did not exist.
What were Jefferson’s concerns about purchasing the Louisiana territory? Why did he overlook his concerns and make the purchase?
Jefferson had concerns about whether the purchase of foreign territory was constitutional or whether an amendment would be required. He decided to put his concerns aside in order to provide land for future generations of farmers and to control trade on the Mississippi River and in the port of New Orleans.
