Why did nationalism grow stronger during the administrations of Madison and Monroe?
The growth of commerce and transportation brought together people from different regions. Economic success, the addition of new territories, and victory in the War of 1812 increased national pride.
What parts of the American System are still in effect today?
The United States still has a national banking system, and the government still subsidizes transportation projects. Although free trade has expanded in modern times, the federal government still sets tariffs on international trade.

How did the Missouri Compromise attempt to solve a problem and cause a potential problem at the same time?

How does the concept of republican motherhood align with the ideals women were expected to live up to in the early republic?
The ideal woman was supposed to be a good wife and mother who deferred to her husband in all things. Women were expected to teach their children, especially sons, to be good citizens of the republic.
What kinds of work did 19th-century women’s organizations do?
Women’s organizations did charitable work, such as caring for orphans and war widows. This suggests that women were encouraged to provide care for others as an extension of their roles as wives and mothers.
How could a more comprehensive education and the expectation of rearing good citizens lead women to seek broader civic roles for themselves?
With more education, women might understand their own capabilities and develop their own ideas. Since part of women’s civic duty was teaching their sons to be involved in the republic, women might think of ways that they could help the republic as well.
