Chapter 9 Pt. 2 - Meiosis Flashcards
Each daughter cell has how many members of a homologous pair?
1 - either male or female.
What is the purpose of Meiosis?
To cut the number of chromosomes in half resulting in four separate cells with a constant chromosome number.
How many chromosomes are in a sperm cell and egg cell EACH?
23 chromosomes. When both come together, it equals 46 chromosomes.
What is the first phase of Meiosis 1?
Prophase 1.
What is the purpose of Prophase 1?
Duplicated chromosomes condense, homologues pair up and cross over, the nuclear envelope disappears, and a spindle forms.
What is the second phase of Meiosis 1?
Metaphase 1
What is the purpose of Metaphase 1?
Paired homologues line up on the equator. The kinetochores attach to the spindle.
What is the third phase of Meiosis 1?
Anaphase 1
What is the purpose of Anaphase 1?
Homologues separate, but sister chromatids stay together. They then move to opposite poles.
What is the fourth phase of Meiosis 1?
Telophase 1
What is the purpose of Telophase 1?
The spindle disappears and Cytokinesis then follows. The microfilaments contract.
What happens after the first phase of Meiosis?
Meiosis occurs again.
What is the first phase of Meiosis 2?
Prophase 2
What is the purpose of Prophase 2?
The chromosomes condense again. The nuclear envelope disappears and the spindle reforms. Sister chromatids then attach to the spindle.
What is the second phase of Meiosis 2?
Metaphase 2
