Q

What is a Somatogyral illusion?

A

Where the semicircular canals can’t accurately register a prolonged or gentle turn and when the pilot goes back to level flight they feel like they are turning the opposite direction.

Q

What is a graveyard spin?

A

A type of somatogyral illustion where the pilot is recoving from a spin but once in steady flight they feel like they are spinning in the opposite direction and so they try to “counter” it and end up reenterring the orginal spin.

Q

What is the Coriolos illusion?

A

When in a sustained turn, if the head is moved in the posterial plane (nodded) then a severe tumbling sensation may be experienced.

Q

What can cause spatial disorientation?

A

False perception of aircraft orientation with respect to spacial references.

If the brain recieves conficting information and pilot does not trust instruments.

8
Q

How can you prevent/overcome spatial disorientation in VMC/IMC?

A

VMC:

Look at horizon

IMC:

Establish and maintain an instrument cross check or a scan that requires minimum head movement.

ALWAYS TRUST INSTRUMENTS

Q

What is Vertigo and what can it be caused by?

A

A sensation of rotating, tumbling or turning.

Causes:

Blocked eustachian tube; Sudden pressure change in inner ear (sneezing or forcefully blowing nose); High G loading; Drug induced; Alcohol intoxication provokes it.

Q

What should you do if you experience vertigo?

A

Establish and maintain effective instrument cross-check

Believe instruments

Ignore illusion

Minimise head movements

In VMC look at horizon.

Q

What is the Stroboscopic effect and what can it lead to?

A

Flickering from man made sources or sun through a propeller.

Can lead to nausea, giddiness and an epileptic type of fit in extreme cases.

14
Q

What are some prevention techniques for the stoboscopic effect?

A

When in clouds, switch off strobe.

Turn out of direction of sun if possible

Most affected person into shaded seat if possible

Cover eyes or window of affected person

sunglasses may reduce effect.

What is the black hole effect?

A
19
Q

What is hypovigilance?

A
20
Q

What are the effects of hypovigilance?

A

Reduced levels of performance

Behavioural changes

Inability to prioritise between tasks

21
Q

What is hypervigilance?

A

An increase state of vigilance and awareness

An increased feeling of tension due to constantly scanning your environment

22
Q

What are the effects of hypervigilance?

A

Reduced ability to perform calculations

Narrowing of attention span

Tendency to complete tasks faster but with less accurately

23
Q

What is response a trade off between?

A
24
Q

What effect does high arousal have on response?

A

It leads to faster but less accurate response
