Chapter 9 - Joints Flashcards
fibrous joint
adjacent bones are bound by collagen fibers that emerge from one bone and penetrate into the other
3 types of fibrous joints
- sutures: skull bones
- gomphoses: teeth to jaw
- syndesmoses: two bones joined by long collagen fibers
cartilaginous joint
2 bones are linked by cartilage
2 types:
synchondroses
symphyses
types of cartilaginous joints
synchondroses
bones joined by hyaline cartilage
* temporary joints in the epiphyseal plates in children
* binds epiphysis and diaphysis
* first rib attachemnt to sternum
symphyses
2 bones joined by fibrocartilage
* pubic symphysis, intervertebral discs
synovial joint
- fluid-filled joint cavity
- most familar type of joint
synarthrosis vs amphiarthrosis vs diarthrosis
synarthrosis: immobile joint
amphiarthrosis: slightly moblie joint
diarthrosis: freely moblie joint
mobility vs stability
mobility is inversely related to stability
(more mobile = less stable
abduction
movement of a body part in the frontal plane away from the midline of the body
hyperabduction example
raise arm over back or front of head
adduction
movement in the frontal plane back towards the midline
hyperadduction examples
crossing fingers, crossing ankles
elevation
movement that raises a body part vertically in the frontal plane
depression
movement that lowers a body part in the same plane
protraction
the anterior movement of a body part in the transverse (horizontal) plane
ex. rolling shoulders forward
