Chapter 9 : Haircutting Flashcards
Form
3 dimensional representation of a shape it has length, width, and depth
Shape
2 dimensions representation of a form because it consists of length and width only
Point
Dot or mark that, when extended becomes a line
Horizontal lines
Parallel to the horizon and are considered stable or restful
Vertical lines
Go straight up and down
Diagonal lines
Fall between horizontal and vertical
Concave
Lines curve inward, like the inside of a sphere
Convex
Lines curve outward, like the outside at a sphere
Most common angles
45’ and 90’
Structure
Consists of the arrangement of lengths across the various curves of the head
Natural fall
The hair lay falls naturally from the curve
Normal projection
A way to analyze the structure on length arrangements of a haircut
Texture activated
Rough
Texture unactivated
Smooth
Solid shape
Rectangle
Solid structure
Shorter exterior progressing to a large exterior
Solid texture
Unactivated
Graduated structure
Shorter exterior gradually progressing
Graduated shape
Triangle
Graduated texture
Unactivated / activated
Increase-layered structure
Shorter interior progressing to larger
Increased-layer shape
Oval
Increased-layer textured
Activated
Uniformed layered structure
Same length throughout
Uniformly layered shape
Circular
Uniformly layered texture
Activated
Combination (box cut) stucture
2 or more forms in any combination
Combination (box cut) shape
Reflects chosen
Combination (box cut) texture
Activated / unactivated
Graduated structure
Very short exterior gradually progressing to larger interior; similar to graduate from by shorter fades and bald fades
Gradation shape
Rectangle/ oval
Graduation texture
Activated
Square combination structure
Uniformed center top to increase layered at front crown; graduated and uniform sides and back
Square combination shape
Square / rectangle
Square combination texture
Activated
Shears cut
Blunts
Razor cuts
The hair at an angle
Clippers cut
Create clean, precise lines or a soft, broom like effect
Taper shears
Consists of one straight blade and one serrated blade
Haircutting
Artistic carving or removing of hair lengths with shears, taper shears, razors, and/or clippers to create various forms and shapes
Palm down
Position the palm of your cutting hand downward. The position is commonly used for cutting solid form lengths
Palm up
Position the palm of your cutting hand upward. This position is commonly used when cutting along diagonal lines
Palm to Palm
When cutting graduated lengths, the hair is held away from the head. Position the palm of your cutting so that it faces the palm of your other hand
On top of the fingers
In the most cases you will cut under (inside) your fingers,as in the previous examples. However, when lifting the lengths on the top of the head, you will need to cut the hair along the top of your fingers
