The legacy of others, often used in the term “rode upon the coattails”
Consultants
Experts from various fields who are paid to assist with a presidential campaign
Expectations game
The expectations game is the management of what the public thinks a candidates policy will be
General election
The election where voters make their final decision on who will hold office
Incumbency advantage
The advantage that those who are in control of an office get when competing in an election against a challenger for a position.
Iowa Caucus
The first major event of the presidential nomination process. Because of its massive influence, candidates practically live in Iowa during presidential election years. The first test of the political viability of a candidate.
Issue voting
Takes place in two ways. In retrospective voting, voters look back at how well a candidate has done. In prospective voting, voters look forward at how well each candidate will perform in the future.
New Hampshire primary
The second major test of a candidates viability. It’s results may be more important than the Iowa caucus because it is a primary with more citizens participating. Usually held a week after the Iowa caucus.
Nomination
The result of many caucuses and primaries. The process which decides who represents each party in the general election.
Party image.
The reaction people have to a political party. The party image is separate from the image of a candidate.
Photo op
The events where candidates attempt to improve their public image through pleasant imagery.
Primary election.
The election where a political party selects who will represent their party in the general election.
Seed money
Money obtained from individuals and groups that are already associated with a group.
