Chapter 9 -4 Flashcards
What are some common gene mutations?
single base pair changes
base pair substitutions
insertions or deletions
What causes mutations?
mutagens
like nuclear radiation and transposable elements
What are transposable elements?
jumping DNA
What is jumping DNA a result of?
Neurofibromatosis (a genetic disorder developed from transposons)
What happens in elongation?
addition of amino acids by tRNA forming the polypeptide chain
What are the 3 parts of elongation?
- codon recognition
- peptide bond formation b/w the 2 a.a.’s
- Translocation
What is translocation?
ribosome moves down mRNA
What happens in codon recognition?
complementary binding of tRNA to mRNA
What happens in termination?
a stop codon enters the ribosome UAG, UAA, UGA
No corresponding tRNA
A release factor (protein) binds
What does termination trigger?
hydrolysis which releases the mRNA, the polypeptide, and the ribosomal subunits
