Chap 4 -3 Flashcards
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
A series of interconnected tubules that has no ribosomes
What is the function of the Smooth ER?
Assemble lipids
Inactivates wastes, drugs
Stores Ca+’s
What kind of lipids does the Smooth ER assemble?
fatty acids, phospholipids, steroids
How does the Smooth ER of the liver inactivate wastes and drugs?
By attaching -OH
What is required for muscle contraction?
Ca+’s
What are Golgi bodies?
stacks of membranous sacs
What do golgi bodies do?
Modifies proteins and lipids that arrive in vesicules
Finish, sort, ship cell products
Manufacture cell wall products
How do golgi bodies modify proteins and lipids?
by adding/removing sugars, phosphates, or split proteins
What do vesicles do?
transport/store polypeptides and lipids
What are the two types of transport vesicles?
endocytic and exocytic
What do transport vesicles do?
transport and help integrate cell activities
What becomes organelles?
lysosomes, central vacuole, peroxisomes
What are lysosomes?
vesticules of digestive enzymes bud from the Golgi
What are the functions of the lysosome?
Break down materials
Digest food
Recycle damaged organelles
Destroy bacteria (WBC’s)
What are some abnormal lysosomes?
Syndactyly
Fatal heritable diseases like Tay sachs
