Chapter 6 -2 Flashcards
The two parts of photosynthesis are?
Light Reactions
Calvin Cycle
What happens in the Light Reaction Part?
The conversion of light energy to chemical energy
and the production of O2 from the splitting of H20
What happens in the Calvin Cycle?
The making of organic compounds from inorganic compounds. Uses chemical energy for carbon fixation
What kind of light drives photosynthesis?
Visible light
What are photons?
pockets of electromagnetic energy
What are photons dependent on?
the wave length
What are pigments?
light absorbing molecules
What happens in black wavelengths?
all wave lengths are absorbed
What happens in white wavelengths?
all colors are reflected
What are 3 things that can happen with the excited electrons?
Fluorescence
Resonance
Reduction/Oxidation
What happens in fluorescence?
Electron falls back to original orbital and releases heat/light
What happens in resonance?
Pigments play hot potato, pass energy around
What happens in Reduction/Oxidation?
Electron given to another molecule
