Chapter 9 Flashcards
Communication
What is communication?
Sending information from one person to another.
Compare encoding to decoding?
Encoding is converting an idea into a message to send.
Decoding is receiving and understanding the encoded message.
The communication process involves 3 steps. What are they?
1- Sender encodes a message and uses a channel to send it.
2- The receiver gets the message and decodes it.
3- The receiver then sends feedback to the sender but that may be distorted due to “noise”.
One-way vs Two-way communication:
One-way: sender to receiver only.
Two-way: When the receiver replies with feedback.
What is “Task Interdependence”?
when a person or task is dependent on another to finish or start.
What’s the difference between pooled, sequential, and reciprocal interdependence?
Pooled: when members work alone then pool their output into one combined output.
Sequential: tasks done in an order.
Reciprocal: when constant communication is needed to finish a task.

-Selective perception.
-Language/culture barriers.

Horizontal: communication between different employees at the same level.
Diagonal: Communication across departments AND levels.
